About the Friends of Mortimer Forest

We are a charitable organization set up to help preserve and enhance the natural environment in Mortimer Forest and to encourage its use to promote mental and physical health and educational activities.

Mortimer Forest is a place of natural beauty, tranquillity and historic significance on the doorstep of Ludlow. Our Patrons and Trustees are committed to maintaining the Forest as such a place for the benefit of the local community, the wider public and future generations.

We will undertake projects and promote activities in and around Mortimer Forest designed to meet these objectives. In doing this, we will work with governmental agencies and other charitable bodies whose objectives are similar or complementary to ours.

Becoming a Friend is free and we welcome a wide membership, including particularly people with a special interest in and/or knowledge of biodiversity, conservation, natural therapy and forest-related skills.  We will from time to time invite members to volunteer to participate in activities which align with their interests.

Please join us and keep in touch with us through this website and Facebook page.

Our Patrons

Sir Jonathon Porritt

“Mortimer Forest is one of the hidden treasures of the Marches. This new charity will help to ensure that its wonderful landscapes and precious wildlife are conserved and restored for the future with the sensitive care they deserve and with the involvement of the local community”

Kelvin Price

“This new charity will be of great value to me in helping to fulfil the mission for the Ludlow Benefice. We are fortunate to have such a glorious, peaceful and unspoilt forest on our doorstep to provide solace and inspiration for all of us. The activities planned by the Friends will particularly help those who are passing through difficult or painful periods in life. It is a real honour to have been asked to be a Patron, thank you.”

Sir Neil Cossons

"I was delighted to be asked to be a Patron of the Friends of Mortimer Forest. All over the country, special places that matter hugely to local people are still vulnerable to insensitive and inappropriate development – despite everything we now know about the critical importance of protecting such places. The work the Friends will be doing to promote environmental education, and to reinforce the links between healthy environments and our own health and wellbeing, is particularly significant."

Rhoddy Swire

"I feel very privileged to be a Patron of the Friends of Mortimer Forest. The Forest has been entwined with the history of Ludlow for Centuries, being named after one of the original land owning families here. It is an incredibly important and valuable amenity for everyone who lives in the area. I whole heartedly endorse the aims and objectives of this new charity. We all have a duty to protect the natural environment and what better demonstration of our commitment to this aim than in support of this charity."
