The Friends of Mortimer Forest offer a range of nature focused walks, talks and activities for our members throughout the year. We hope that you enjoy the projects we are planning. If you have an area of expertise and would like to lead a future walk please contact us. Thank you to all who have contributed to the successful programme so far.
We advertise our guided walks and provide approximate timings and an indication of the level of ability needed for each walk. Please exercise your own judgement when joining the walks, they are of mixed ability, usually on woodland tracks on varied terrain. Please contact us in advance if you have any questions about walk ability or suitability.

Fungi Foray in Mortimer Forest
Please join fungi expert Jo Weightman, Country Recorder for Hereford and fungi expert, on a guided walk in Mortimer Forest.
This meeting is suitable for all abilities, it is not with a view to pick and eat mushrooms, but will focus on fungi identification with may include edible species. Please bring good walking shoes, waterproofs and water.
Park in the public car park (Black Pool) just off the B4361 Ludlow to Richard’s Castle road, 2 miles south-west of Ludlow (Grid ref: SO497717).

Save the date - Variety Show at St Laurence's Church, Ludlow
Details of special guests to follow - Tickets will be sold from the Ludlow Assembly Rooms (£23 each) and via their online website. After the success of our event in 2024, we are back at St Laurence’s church for another Variety Night curated and compered by Ludlow’s own, Alistair McGowan!
It promises to be an evening packed with local talent :
singers from the world of opera, musicals and folk, pianists young and old playing some familiar pieces and some original compositions ; forest poetry, Alistair’s poetry, Alistair’s comedy, a chance to learn about the origin of forest words, names and traditions, a chance to hear the organ played and even, perhaps, a little magic.
It should be an oh-so special night all to help the friends of the forest carry on loving and caring for our oh-so special trees, land and wildlife.

The Normans - Language and History Guided Walk in Mortimer Forest
Please join history expert Phil Horsfall for a guided walk in Mortimer Forest bringing to life the history and language of The Normans.
Please bring good walking shoes, waterproofs and water. The walk follows woodland paths and is circular.
Park in the public car park (Vinnalls Car Park). Find us off the Ludlow to Wigmore road, 2½ miles south-west of Ludlow (Grid ref: SO474731).

Poetry Walk in Mortimer Forest
An evening summer walk of Poetry in Mortimer Forest.
Our next guided walk is poetry focused, a summer walk from Black Pool Car Park with poets who will read their work in The Ludlow Poetry Collection.
This book of poems about Ludlow and it's heritage is being sold in support of the Ludlow Town Walls Trust at £10/copy with proceeds from sales to help restoration and preservation of the town walls.

Ludlow Green Festival 2026 - Visit our stand from 10-4pm on 12th July
Ludlow Green Festival, the county’s largest event that brings environmental issues to the forefront through interactive and entertaining ways.
We will have a charity stand on the Market Square. We will showcase the work of the charity, share information about what we do, our upcoming projects and events, and details on how to volunteer or become a member.
This year we are very pleased to be joined by Neil Taylor who will be doing a live demonstration of woodwork and using traditional tools of his trade. @neiltaylorseats

Evening Birdsong Walk - Birds of the Mortimer Forest with Dave Pearce
An evening summer walk listening to birdsong.
Dave Pearce is back following a successful walk last year. He will be leading a small group from Hanway Common in Mortimer Forest to hear the Spring Dusk Chorus.
The walk will depart from the entrance to Hanway Common, SY8 4ET or What3Words - trapdoor.packages.oath
Private parking on the common. The route is suitable for good walkers, the terrain is mixed woodland and can be steep in parts.

Calling all Early Birds - A dawn chorus walk hearing birdsong in Mortimer Forest.
Calling all early birds for a morning guided walk in the forest.
Dave Pearce is back following a successful walk last year. He will be leading a small group in the Mortimer Forest in the early morning to hear the Spring Dawn Chorus.
The walk will depart from Mary Knoll Cottages, Whitcliffe, Killhorse Lane, SY8 2HD. Private parking at the cottage. The route is suitable for good walkers, the terrain is mixed woodland and can be steep in parts.

Learn about the nature and history of Mortimer Forest in this morning walk.
A walk back through time with Colin Richards and Andrew Allott in Mortimer Forest, departing from Black Pool Car Park.
Andrew has written a natural history of the Welsh Marches and will guide the group through Mortimer Forest explaining its history and connection the the past.
The route is suitable for most walkers, the terrain is mixed woodland and can be steep in parts. For this walk we suggest walking boots, and a waterproof, optional snacks/water and camera/binoculars.
